How to Maintain Your Locs at Home
Simple daily habits that keep your locs healthy, clean, and looking great between your salon visits.
Locs are a long-term commitment — and like any beautiful thing, they reward consistent care. The good news? Maintaining healthy locs at home doesn’t require a salon toolkit. Just a few mindful habits make all the difference.
Start With a Clean Scalp
Healthy locs begin at the root. Aim to wash your scalp every 1–2 weeks, depending on your activity level. Use a residue-free shampoo — buildup is a loc’s quiet enemy.
“Clean locs are healthy locs. Don’t let fear of frizz stop you from washing regularly.”
Focus the shampoo on your scalp, let it rinse down through the length, and avoid scrubbing the locs themselves aggressively.
Moisture Without the Weight
Dryness is the most common complaint among loc wearers. But heavy oils and butters cause buildup. Instead:
- Use a light water-based moisturiser or aloe vera spritz
- Apply sparingly at the roots and work down
- Avoid petroleum-based products entirely
What to look for on labels
Look for ingredients like aloe vera, glycerin, and jojoba oil. Steer clear of mineral oil, lanolin, or beeswax — these coat the hair shaft and are nearly impossible to fully remove.
Palm Rolling at Home
Between retwist appointments, palm rolling keeps your roots looking neat. Here’s how:
- Lightly dampen your roots with water or a diluted leave-in
- Place a loc between your palms
- Roll firmly in one direction — always the same direction
- Sit under a hooded dryer or allow to air-dry fully before bed
Never go to sleep with damp locs. Mildew is real, and it’s difficult to treat once established.
Protect at Night
A satin or silk bonnet is non-negotiable. Cotton pillowcases absorb moisture and create friction that leads to frizz and breakage at the hairline.
If you find bonnets uncomfortable, try a silk pillowcase as an alternative — it’s not quite as effective, but far better than cotton.
When to Come In
No amount of home care replaces a professional retwist. You should see us at Fabz every 4–8 weeks, depending on how fast your hair grows and how neat you like your roots.
Signs it’s time to book:
- Roots are longer than 1.5cm
- Locs are starting to join at the roots
- Your scalp feels itchy or flaky despite washing
The Bottom Line
Healthy locs aren’t complicated — they just need consistency. A clean scalp, light moisture, and nightly protection will keep your locs thriving between appointments.
When in doubt, come see us. We’re always happy to check in on your loc journey, no matter what stage you’re at.
